Former Miss Turkey jailed for insulting Erdogan

Former Miss Turkey Merve Buyuksarac has been given a jail sentence for insulting Turkish President Erdogan in a social media post.

Merve Buyuksarac, was handed a 14-month suspended sentence, meaning she will be sent to jail if she does anything in the period deemed to qualify as “reoffending”. Merve Buyuksarac was crowned Miss Turkey in 2006.

Miss Buyuksarac was briefly detained for posting a satirical poem on her instagram account. 'The Master’s Poem’, it reportedly criticised Mr Erdogan – then the Prime Minister - and adapts the country’s national anthem in its verses.
