Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called on not to implement death penalty verdict on Hussain Humam of H. Lobby on the first degree murder charges over the murder of late Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, without finding the real perpetrators of the murder. MDP said the death penalty trial was fast tracked to hide the real perpetrators of the crime.
A statement released by the Party over the death penalty verdict upheld by the Supreme Court said that it was extremely clear that Dr. Afrasheem's murder was a carefully orchestrated murder, with Humam as the patsy. Given the circumstances, it was concerning the case was carried out late into the night without carrying out a proper investigation.
The statement also said that it was deeply concerning that Supreme Court had refused to take into consideration the will of Dr. Afrasheem's next of kin over the implementation of the death penalty. Supreme Court had refused to accept the letter sent by the family stating that officials were over.
MDP said that while Supreme Court had refused to accept the letter sent by the family stating that official hours were over, but the trial was carried out late at night. The statement said it was not reasonable justification.
MDP had called on the state to revise the verdict and not to implement the verdict.
