PPM MPs file suit against Maumoon over "hijacking" party

Three Members of Parliament from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has filed suit in Civil Court against former President and PPM President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom for "hijacking" the Party.

A PPM MP said the case was filed in Civil Court as Maumoon had on his own accord formed an advisory council, against Party laws and without discussing with Party Council and had suspended all Party operations. The case was filed by Hulhudhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Shahid, Naifaru Constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam and Dhaandhoo Constituency MP Ahmed Assad.

Speaking to Avas, Shiyam said that PPM was not the property of a single individual. He said that Maumoon had taken over the Party executive powers, adding that most Party members wanted to resume Party activities.

The case was filed in reference to clause 37 and 39 of the Party laws which concerns the suspension of Party operations and formation of an Advisory Council.

"The Party laws state that party meetings have to be held twice every month. That had not been done, we have requested to enact measures on this as well," Shiyam said.
