Parliament session halted over protests calling for Mahloof's release

Opposition Members of Parliament had called for the release of MP Ahmed Mahloof in today's session. The session was halted due to this and as there were no other MPs who had requested for debate time on today's agenda. MP Mahloof was sentenced for four months and 24 days, over charges of obstruction of duties.

MDP MPs had begun calling to free Mahloof when the debate session on the pay structure amendment began. The MPs had also called on the Government to resign.

PP PG leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik and Deputy PG Leader Riyaz Rasheedh were the only MPs who were able to contribute to the debate session. However, due to the protesting MPs, what they said was unclear. No other MPs had requested for time and as such, the Speaker had announced that voting will be carried out as planned at 1330hrs.
