FAM's financial woes not due to ministry, says Youth Minister

Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment Minister Ahmed Mahloof has said the Youth Ministry has paid all dues to the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

Responding to a question by Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, Minister Mahloof said FAM is unable to make payments to other parties not because the ministry had not released payments to FAM.

“The issue here is that the association is unable to make payments for works that were not directly undertaken by the association itself,” Mahloof said.

The minister said the national associations were created to be responsible for their own debt. The ministry will not be held responsible for the debt, he said.

Acknowledging that are concerns about the FAM, Minister Mahloof said the ministry is looking into ways to resolve them. He said the association recently assured that the financial matters would be settled very soon.

The utility company, STELCO cut off power to FAM House last October due to non-payment of MVR 6.5 million owed in bills. The FAM has also been ordered to pay millions to ADK Hospital for services rendered. The FAM has not paid several other companies and some national team players and clubs.
