Police enters Maldives Independent Office building

Police have begun the search of H. Hulhugali, the premises of Maldives Independent office. Maldives Independent, an offshoot of Minivan News, is on the fourth floor of the building.

Police said the entire building will be searched as part of an ongoing investigation. The court order for the arrest stated that the building was being searched on suspicion of a plot to overthrow the Government and create dissent in public. The order said it was issued on basis of intelligence reports.

Hulhugali is owned by former Minister and MDP Vice President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki. Maldives Independent Editor Zaheena Rasheed had provided information to Stealing Paradise, which premiered today. The paper had provided information to Will Jordan the maker of the documentary.

The Government had previously said that action will be taken against those who had supplied falsified information to the documentary.
