- Maumoon says members engineered coup
- Members must vow they did not plot said coup
- Council must finalize representatives for talks
Former President and Leader of Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says the Party's council will be held only after the members who had filed suit against him, having claimed that Maumoon had hijacked the Party.
The President's Office had requested that Party Councils finalize the list of representatives for the party talks.
The former President had nominated his son and Dhiggaru Constituency MP Faris Maumoon and Thulusdhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Waheed for the talks. However, the President's Office said those were not vetted by the Council they are not fit to represent the Party.
A message sent by Maumoon to the Party's viber group, said the Council meeting held on the 19th of July, Party members had rebelled against him, walked out resulting in the loss of quorum and spread various stories in the media with the intention to defame him. He said those members who had filed suit must apologize, and pledge not to act against the Party laws, for the Council meeting to proceed.
Hulhudhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Shahid, Naifaru Constituency MP Ahmed Shiyam and Dhaandhoo Constituency MP Ahmed Assad filed suit against Maumoon. Civil Court had ruled in favor of the applicants.
The members of the Council had left the meeting raising objection towards the presence of Members Faris and Nadira who had been dismissed by the Party's Ethics Committee.
