Voters list for local council elections published on the gazette

The voters list for the 2017 local council election has been published on the gazette. The list is also published on the Commission's website .

Elections Commission (EC) says individuals can check their details and apply to correct the details within a ten day period.

A total of 651 councilors will be elected to positions in Island, Atoll and City Councils.

Summary of elections

561 councilors for 179 islands
67 councilors for 57 electoral areas in 19 areas
23 councilors for Male', Addu and Fuvahmulah

Local Council elections will be held on January 14. EC says they will open applications for candidates on the 26th of this month. The term of the current councils will expire on February 26.

MDP, Adhaalath Party and PPM are now preparing for their internal primaries to select the candidates for the Councils.

EC says around 480 boxes will be placed in various parts of the country. EC had also passed not to place ballot boxes outside of Maldives.

With the latest amendment to the Local Council act, the number of Councilors have been reduced. If the population in one designated area is lesser than 3000, the area will have three Councilors to represent them. If the population is above 3000, then the area can have five Councilors to represent them.
