Government has switched its plan to construct the 25 floor finance ministry building from the capital Male to reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.
The Finance Ministry informed that the project which was contracted to Malaysia's WZR Property was switched to Hulhumale' due to the disruptions it would cause to the public had the construction gone through in Male.
Several main roads would have had to close down, giving way to the construction. Finance Ministry said that the building is already 6 months behind on it's starting deadline due to such issues.
The ministry also said despite the location change, the price and duration of the project would remain the same.
"This decision was made due to certain roads having to close down, the disruptions it would cause to the public and the difficulties that would be faced by office workers and school kids in the nearby area," a senior official of the Finance Ministry explained.
"With this change, this project will be completed by its due date in 2018."
President Abdulla Yameen plans to make Hulhumale' a youth city, and have Hulhumale' house 70% of the Maldivian population. As the second phase of the Hulhumale' development, an area equal to Hulhumale' has been claimed from the sea and 15,000 flats are being constructed on that land. The Finance Ministry inform that those flats will also finish by the time the bridge is opened in 2018, allowing many offices and people to change over there.
The government had decided that part of the 25 floor building would have been given to private offices for rent, while restaurants and cafe's would also be built there alongside government service providers allowing for a one spot service center in the capital Male'.
The Finance Ministry informs that even though the building will no longer be constructed in Male', the building on it's initial construction site will still be cleared, and that this land would still be used for another project that would be beneficial.
