Former deputy leader of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Alhan Fahmy Sunday vowed to appeal his removal from the party the day before.
Alhan was dismissed by the MDP disciplinary committee for allegedly violating the party charter and tarnishing its reputation.
The former lawmaker told reporters on Sunday that he would seek the intervention of the party's appeal committee but would take his removal to the courts if it does not rule in his favour.
Alhan's matter was discussed within the party and the party arrived with four stipulations for Alhan, the first of which being his removal from the party. The second stipulation was that Alhan could only re-apply for MDP membership with membership forms for 50 new members.
The third one states that Alhan must issue a formal apology for his behaviour. The committee had also banned Alhan participating in any inter-party elections for the next three years even if he re-joins.
Alhan was removed from the party on grounds of acting in ways which damage the party. Some of the cases against him include speaking in government aligned media outlets, refusing to acknowledge the MDP led opposition alliance and causing disruptions in the party office.
In his defense, Alhan said that he is not some one who will just say "yes sir" to every command by the party leader and that he will always work in the best interest of party members.
"I am not some one who will be saying 'Yes Sir!' 'Yes Sir!' to everything. I work for the people. I will work for the people as the President next," Alhan said.
Alhan said that the reason MDP failed in the 2013 election was because they sent out former President Mohamed Nasheed as the candidate, and that if another candidate was nominated, then MDP might have won the election.
Alhan reiterated his announcement that he will be competing for the presidency in 2018.
