Ex-opposition deputy leader sues EC over party ax

Former Vice President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Alhan Fahmee has filed a case in court against the country's elections commission over its decision to remove him from the MDP members registry.

The main opposition party had ousted Alhan accusing the former lawmaker of violating the party's charter and bringing disrepute to the party's reputation.

Allegations against Alhan include failing to recognizing the opposition alliance of which MDP was a member, public statements in favour of the government and causing discord in the party office. The complaint was filed to the party disciplinary committee with the signature of 50 members of MDP's national council.

Alhan had challenged the decision at the party's appeal committee.

The former lawmaker has argued that the elections commission had removed him from the MDP members registry before the appeal committee had made a decision.

He has asked the court to order the elections commission to re-include his name in the party's registry.

Alhan had also filed a case in court against MDP, stating that the party has failed to hold elections to appoint a new party leader. He had requested for a court order to force the party to hold elections to fill the positions of party president and vice president.

Alhan however, lost the case to MDP late last year.
