Court to hear MDP leadership re-election case

Maldives civil court has accepted the case filed by former deputy leader of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Alhan Fahmy seeking force the election of a new leader and deputy.

Alhan filed the case in Civil Court, saying that the term for the elections which saw him elected ended on the April 30, 2012. The 2011 elections saw Alhan elected as Deputy and Dr Ibrahim Didi elected as President of the party.

After Alhan and Ibrahim Didi were removed from their respective posts, former President Mohamed Nasheed was elected as the president and Mohamed Shifaz was elected as his deputy. Alhan's case in court is that the current term has ended as well, and that a new election must be held.

Alhan requests the court to order the party to hold an internal election as dictated by the party charter. The law regarding political parties dictate that each party must follow their own charter.

While the Civil Court has approved Alhan's case against MDP, the Civil Court has also recently held a case against Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) the aftermath of which resulted in the party's leadership switching from former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to the party's chief adviser and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
