Maldives parliament sets three day budget debate

Maldives parliament is set to spend three days to debate on the proposed budget for next year.

During the parliament sitting on Monday, the secretariat announced that debate that was kick-started on Monday would continue until 11pm every day for three days.

As passed by the parliamentary budget review committee, each lawmaker would initially be given 15 minutes followed by an addition seven minutes during the budget debate.

Proposed state budget for 2017

  • Total budget MVR26 billion
  • Proposed state revenue MVR21 billion
  • Budget deficit MVR303 million

With spending projected to reach MVR22.5 billion, a fiscal deficit of MVR4.3 billion or 4.4 percent of GDP is expected.
