Maldives govt says woman, child not held 'captive' in Bangladesh

Maldives government has tracked down the woman and her child reportedly held 'captive' in Bangladesh and said the two were living 'happily'.

According to reports the young Maldivian and her child have been held captive in Bangladesh by her husband.

Sources say the young woman had fled to Bangladesh without the knowledge of her family to be with her lover who is reportedly the father of the child.

The man had reportedly held the woman and the child 'captive' after she tried to return to the Maldives with help of her family.

Foreign ministry in a statement said the Maldives embassy in Bangladesh had tracked downed the family after an official complaint was filed by the woman's family and had taken her statement in a local police station in the presence of an embassy official.

According to the ministry, the woman had given a statement to the police saying that she had not been abused by her husband and was living happily with their child.

The two had met while the man was working in Maldives but was later deported on a drugs charge.
