Gayoom faction lawmaker faces clemency board ax

A government lawmaker Wednesday proposed a motion remove the Parliament's representative on the clemency board Ibrahim Waheed.

Waheed who supports ousted ruling party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been accused of negligence in the board.

The motion proposed by MP Ali Arif states that Waheed has been negligent in his duties at the clemency board as the parliament's representative.

If the motion is passed, the Parliament will officially ask President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to remove Waheed from his position on the clemency board.

The bill has been voted to be debated on the Parliament floor. This was passed with the vote of 18 members. Arif has stated that Waheed only has a 33% attendance at the clemency board this year.

"Waheed is a member appointed by us. So if they fail to do their work, then we must be responsible for removing him. This is not being done for another reason," Arif said.

Most opposition lawmakers sided with Waheed saying that the move was prompted by the rift between the Gayoom brothers.
