Parliament ousts Gayoom faction lawmaker from clemency board

Parliament Monday voted to oust its representative Ibrahim Waheed to the clemency board.

The motion proposed a government lawmaker was passed during Monday's sitting with 41 lawmakers voting in favour.

Waheed who supports ousted ruling party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had been accused of negligence in the board.

The motion proposed by MP Ali Arif states that Waheed has been negligent in his duties at the clemency board as the parliament's representative.

With the motion now passed, the Parliament will officially ask President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to remove Waheed from his position on the clemency board.

Most opposition lawmakers sided with Waheed saying that the move was prompted by the rift between the Gayoom brothers.

The ugly fallout between the two Gayooms reached a bitter end after the younger Gayoom was handed the party reins by a court order which was later backed by the appellate courts.
