Maldives govt looks to tap halal tourism market

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom recognizes the importance of Islamic economics for financing the development efforts of the nation, vice president Abdulla Jihad said Thursday.

Speaking during the third Islamic Banking and Finance Industry Conference at Bandos Island Resort
on Thursday, the vice president noted that the purpose of Maldives Center for Islamic Finance Ltd was to achieve the important objective of developing Islamic finance and the halal industry in the country in-order to establish Maldives as a hub for Islamic finance in the South East.

Jihad also highlighted that halal tourism is now an established concept in global tourism and that the government recognizes the importance of tapping into this lucrative market segment in order to maintain the stronghold Maldives has in the global tourism industry.

The vice president also revealed that the government has continuously seeks to incorporate equity and inclusiveness in the course of development.
