ACC probes 'inactive' newspapers in media council polls

Maldives graft watchdog is set to look into complaints over allowing inactive newspapers to vote in the Maldives Media Council (MMC) elections.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chief Hassan Luthfee said the complaints have been brought to the attention of the home ministry -- the parent authority of local media outlets.

According to the registry of eligible voters list, 86 media outlets have been officially registered.

Due to the complaints, the elections slated for Friday has since been postponed.

Luthfee said the commission would filter the registry and would ensure that only the active media outlets are allowed to vote in the elections.

The media council comprises of 15 members -- eight members representing the media, and seven members representing the public.

The ministry has published the list of candidates: 17 candidates from the media are running for seven slots, while 12 from the public are running for six slots.

However, since the term of two of the current members have still not ended, only 13 members will be elected in the next election.
