HDC moves to tear down illegal construction in Hulhumale

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Monday moved to tear down illegal construction in some of the flats in phase one in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.

HDC had earlier given two months for the tenants to remove illegal construction in the garden space of the buildings.

The company had earlier said several ground-floor tenants had illegally constructed rooms in the garden space which had prompted the action.

HDC director Ahmed Fathih told Avas on Monday that as several tenants had failed to heed teh warning, the company had now moved to remove the illegal construction.

However, Fathih was quick to insist that HDC would still talk to the tenants before tearing down the illegal construction.

"We will still talk to them [tenants]. Because they are people living in most of the illegally constructed rooms. But two months was more than sufficient time for them to vacate. We cannot give any more time. But we still have to listen to them before we move into tear down those places," Fathih explained.
