Tenants bemoan move to demolish 'illegal' construction

Some tenants of the phase one flats in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale Tuesday bemoaned the move by Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to tear down illegal construction in some of the flats.

HDC had earlier given two months for the tenants to remove illegal construction in the garden space of the buildings.

The company had earlier said several ground-floor tenants had illegally constructed in the garden space which had prompted the action.

HDC director Ahmed Fathih told Avas on Monday that as several tenants had failed to heed the warning, the company had now moved to remove the illegal construction.

However, some of the tenants argued that they had constructed rooms in the garden space after getting the green-light from HDC.

The sudden u-turn on an earlier decision is unacceptable and has resulted in major losses, some tenants bemoaned.

"They [HDC] began from our house yesterday [Monday]. We talked to HDC and they explained how they were going to do it. But they never said anything about tearing down the boundary wall. A lot of our things were damaged when they tore down the wall without any notice," an angry tenant told Avas.

The tenant said he had no qualms about meeting HDC regulations but insisted that the demolition notice was extremely hazy.

However, HDC denied the accusations insisting that it had at no point issued permits for construction or enclose the garden space.
