Maldives to test first mechanical parking system

In a bid to ease the overcrowding in the capital Male, the government is set to test the first mechanical parking system, housing ministry said Friday.

The first system dedicated for four wheeled vehicles would be set up adjacent to the main government office complex Velaanaage, one of the busiest areas in the capital Male.

State housing minister Ahmed Habeeb told Avas that the foundation of the first system has been completed and the structural work was near completion.

Habeeb said the system would accommodate 10 cars and the ministry would bring in two more systems once the first system is up and running.

A system that could accommodate up to a 100 motorbikes would be brought in during January, Habeeb added.

Government had earlier announced plans to establish 20 mechanical parking systems throughout the congested capital.

"If you look at the pace now, we would be able to establish all the parking systems within four months," Habeeb said.
