Maldives government has successfully tested the first mechanical parking system as it looks to ease the overcrowding issue in the capital Male, housing ministry said Thursday.
The first system dedicated for four wheeled vehicles has been set up adjacent to the main government office complex Velaanaage, one of the busiest areas in the capital Male.
Housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the system has been 'successfully' tested.
Muizzu had earlier announced plans to publicize a regulation under which the automated parking systems would be used.
The ministry had said the system would accommodate 10 cars and two more systems would be brought in once the first system is up and running.
A system that could accommodate up to a 100 motorbikes would be brought in during January, the ministry had said.
Government had earlier announced plans to establish 20 mechanical parking systems throughout the congested capital.
