Unpaid labour plagues expats in Maldives, says HRCM

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Sunday revealed that it had received 30 complaints involving migrant workers this past year, and that the largest issue is the failure to pay migrant workers.

HRCM released statistics to mark the international migrants day, which show that it had received nine complaints from expats which include failure to pay wages, holding them against their will, terminating them from employment and not giving them satisfactory living conditions.

HRCM has received seven complaints of migrant's being forced to work without pay, three cases of holding them against their will. three terminating them from employment, three for harming them in work environment and two complaints for not showing them a suitable accommodation.

HRCM had also called on authorities to enforce harsher punishment for migrant rights violations.
