Turkish firm to design Maldives youth city

Turkish engineering consulting and contracting company (TUMAS) has been awarded the project to design the infrastructure and manage the youth city being developed in the second phase of the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.

Speaking after awarding the project worth around USD3 million to TUMAS, Hulhumale Development Corporation (HDC) managing director Mohamed Simon revealed that the Saudi Fund which is bankrolling the project had advised to hire an international consultancy firm.

TUMAS has agreed to design the channels, connecting bridges, harbour and tourism island being developed in the second phase, Simon explained.

"Every project bankrolled under the Saudi Fund's USD80 million is ongoing quite swiftly. We've completed almost all local aspects of these projects which includes sheet piling and the design of some areas," he said.

"The Turkish firm says that it would be able to complete the project well before the agreed date. So we're hoping to get this project underway during this year."

The government had reclaimed 240 hectares of land under Hulhumale’s second phase development.

HDC has planned to link the first with the second phase via four connecting bridges. In addition, two more bridges would connect the tourism island with the main island while two bridges would also link the yacht marina with the cruise terminal.
