Maldives again hikes fuel surcharge

State electricity company Sunday again hiked fuel surcharge from Friday making it the second time in the last month.

State Electric Company (STELCO) said price of an electricity unit had been increased from 27 Laari to 38 Laari with effect from last Friday to reflect the rising global fuel prices.

STELCO’s statistics show that it had purchased a diesel litre at MVR 8.91 since December 9. If the diesel rate per litre exceeds MVR 8, the energy authority had sanctioned the company to levy three laari as surcharge from every additional 10 laari.

The price STELCO had to pay to secure diesel and risen from MVR 8.40 per litre in November to MVR 8.91 in December and MVR 9.28 in January.

The hike in fuel surcharge means, consumers could be faced with another electricity hike.
The government had reversed the tariff hike for households in January in the wake of a public outcry.

But the continued complaints had prompted the government to announce plans to reconsider the tariff which however is yet to materialize.

State Trading Organization (STO) meanwhile has revised petrol prices to MVR9.35 per litre recently.
