Maldives records over 11 percent revenue hike in 2016

The total received received last year has increased by 11.2 percent in comparison with statistics of the previous year.

The December statistics of the government tax agency, Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) show that over the 12 months of 2016, the government had made an income of MVR14.5 billion which is a 11.2 percent increase from MVR13 billion in 2015.

MIRA said MVR2.7 billion revenue was generated through business tax. The income from business tax for 2015 was MVR2.6 billion. A total of MVR6.2 billion was received in 2016 from GST while it had been at MVR6 billion in 2015.

From land leased for tourism, the government earned MVR1.4 billion in 2016, compared to MVR1.1 billion the previous year. Through green tax, the government made MVR633 million in 2016, a huge increase from the MVR45 million Rufiyaa generated in 2015.

A total of USD572 million was generated by the government in 2016, a 10 percent increase from the USD518 million dollars of the previous year. MIRA said that December alone saw MVR1billion enter the government.
