The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Prosecutor General's office to charge the Managing Director of soon to be dissolved Works Corporation Ltd with corruption charges.
He is being accused of abuse of power in the purchase of excavators.
Works Corporation, now heading towards dissolution, was the company created during the tenure of former President Mohamed Nasheed for road construction.
In a report released by the ACC on Wednesday, it is said that the contract between a private contractor and Works Corporation in the procurement of two excavators listed the dollar exchange rate as 13.75 Maldivian rufiyaa. The dollar exchange set by the central bank at the time however was only at 12.85 Maldivian rufiyaa per dollar.
The sale of dollars in the Maldives at any other rate than the one set by the central bank, the Maldivian Monetary Authority (MMA), is illegal in the Maldives.
ACC said that the Managing Director of Works Corporation had signed the agreement, who explained that the higher rate for dollars was set due to the difficulties in the procurement of dollars.
ACC however, said the company records show that the contractors were paid with Maldivian rufiyaa without any attempt to acquire dollars.
ACC said that an additional MVR358,200 had been paid to the contractors in violation of the rates set by the MMA.
ACC had requested the PG office to press charges against the Managing Director of Works Corporation after the investigation into the matter concluded that he had abused his power for the benefit of a third party, and to recover the money.
