Maldives slaps six bird poachers with huge fines

The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has slapped six people with huge fines over the illegal capture of an endangered species of birds.

EPA said following separate investigations into the reports, the poachers from Meemu Atoll have been duly penalized.

The four poachers from Meemu Atoll Mulak island were fined MVR96,000 for their involvement in the capture and caging of eight birds of protected species.

The two offenders from Meemu Atoll Muli island were fined MVR60,500 for the five birds found in their possession.

A man from Baa Atoll had also been fined a sum of MVR111,500 in a similar case last month.
