Bike taxi service to be introduced nation-wide

A day after bike taxi service was unveiled in the capital Male, transport authority Monday revealed plans to introduce the service nation-wide.

Transport Authority chief, Abdul Rasheed Nafiz said taxi service was sufficently available in the islands proving a great inconvenience to the public.

Nafiz said the authorities have reached an agreement with bike taxi service provider to expand operations to every inhabited island.

"The public have graciously appreciated the bike taxi service. Interest was being expressed in introducing this service to the islands as well. So we have decided to allow those who request to provide these services in islands to do it," Nafiz said.

A minimum of 20 cycles are required to provide service, along with some other minor conditions.

The bike taxis have been well received thus far with only MVR10 charged per trip.
