President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Monday announced that the government in its three years in office had created 64,000 new jobs out of the 94,000 target in his electoral pledge.
In his address to reconvene the parliament for this year, president Yameen said the continuous efforts of the government to ensure infrastructure development and increase productivity had made great strides into achieving the 94,000 job target by the end of his tenure.
"We estimate that 64,000 jobs have been created in the past three years. If we look at the new resorts set to open along with several major projects, we expect this year to be a rich one for the job market," he said.
President also highlighted the initiatives government has taken to get young people interested in sectors such as agriculture. Such initiatives are designed to encourage young people to be more productive, president added.
