Parliament announces deputy speaker's ax from MDP

Parliament Wednesday announced deputy speaker Moosa Manik as an independent member after main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) axed the outspoken lawmaker from the party.

MDP had asked the elections commission to remove the Hulhu-Henveiru MP from the party registry in December last year.

After Manik's ax was announced during Wednesday's sitting, Manik described as the greatest injustice adding that he had been in sincere service of MDP for the past 13 years.

He also described MDP as an autocratic party in the grip of former president Mohamed Nasheed.

Manik has fallen out with MDP and was subsequently dismissed from the party for breaking a party whip line during a parliamentary vote.
