Maldives opposition elects new chairperson

Main Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Friday elected member of former president Mohamed Nasheed's legal team, Hassan Latheef as the party's new chairperson.

The former youth minister Hassan Latheef was the sole candidate for the chairperson's post, which meant the party held a referendum to elect Latheef to the post.

Preliminary results indicate that over 14,000 members voted in favour Latheef.

MDP is yet to announce the official results, but the overwhelming nature of the referendum, it is highly unlikely that the result could change as Latheef only needed a minimum of 5,000 votes to secure the post.

The post was vacated after Ali Waheed living in self imposed exile in the UK resigned late November.
