Parliament to review budget expenditure in April

Parliament would begin to review the state expenses allocated from the state budget for the year from April, chief government lawmaker Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik revealed Saturday.

The Villi-Maafannu MP's comments come after the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had called on the budget review committee to monitor the expenses by state institutions saying that it was the committee's responsibility to do so.

Nihan who is the committee's chair said the finance minister Ahmed Munawwar would be summoned to find out if the institutions funded by the state budget was on track to achieve the objectives outlined in the budget.

The government controlled parliament had signed off on the MVR26.7 billion budget proposed for this year.

The government had capped spending with 38 percent on social development programs, 13 percent on economic development, 27 percent on public service provision, 22 percent on debt servicing and developing a sovereign development fund.

Revenue forecast for next year is MVR21.9 billion, which includes MVR14.1 billion in taxes, MVR4.8 billion in non-tax revenue, MVR876 million as grant aid, and MVR2 billion from new revenue-raising measures.
Government had looked to curb recurrent expenditure, allocating 60 percent on PSIP.
