'India can turn Maldives into south Asia's Hong Kong'

India can play a key role to make Maldives, south Asia's Hong Kong, construction tycoon and Maldives Association of Construction Industry (MACI) president Mohamed Ali Janah said Tuesday.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony to kick-start construction in the two remaining plots awarded from the capital Male to Indian contractor TATA housing, Janah highlighted the "inseparable" long standing relations between regional giants India and the Maldives.

Maldives could never compete against the economic might of India, Janah stressed adding that the two can develop together.

"India has one of the largest economies in the world. And it still has room to go. It could even bypass China. So Maldives has the potential to become south Asia's Hong Kong," Janah said.

He also called on Indian investors to look for more investments in the Maldives.
