State Trading Organisation (STO) on Sunday assigned waste disposal from the company sites to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).
STO Managing Director Ahmed Shaheer speaking during the signing ceremony noted the company's extensive CSR efforts.
Shaheer announced that STO would assist WAMCO dispose waste in the future in addition to aiding efforts to raise public awareness on proper garbage disposal.
Under the deal signed between the two companies, STO vessels would be used by WAMCO for transportation of garbage to be recycled to India. STO also revealed plans to help WAMCO dispose E-waste.
"E-waste is an important category of waste. We will aid in the disposal of that as well. STO works closely with many multinational companies. Specially companies such as Hitachi, a company renowned for it's disposal of E-waste in India. We are discussing with Hitachi to secure aid in disposal of Maldivian E-waste," Shaheer said.
WAMCO's Managing Director, Ibrahim Fuad stated that waste would be disposed from 14 STO sites under this deal. A monthly fee would be charged with special emphasis give to identifying recyclable waste in addition to awareness campaign for both the public and staff.
Fuad noted that if the initiative between STO and WAMCO is successful, it would mean a huge boost for sustainable waste management policy in the Maldives.
