Govt looks to set up backup generators for capital

Government Sunday moved to resolve the power outages in the capital Male by awarding a land plot in the recently reclaimed industrial village to State Electric Company limited (STELCO) to establish back generators.

Speaking during the agreement signing ceremony, housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu said STELCO would use the plot to establish power generators to cater to the industrial village in addition with backup to the rest of the capital.

"We've awarded the plot without any fees. Because electricity is a basic need. So we hope the public would be able to benefit from this initiative. We also hope that STELCO would kick-start the power house project soon," Muizzu said.
