The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has been awarded a contract to manage waste in Addu City.
At the ceremony held in the Environment Ministry, the Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim signed the agreement with WAMCO on behalf of the government. Signing on behalf of WAMCO was Managing Director, Ibrahim Fuad.
The agreement requires WAMCO to safely dispose of waste in Addu City and to establish a sustainable system for managing waste in the city.
Minister Thoriq said that the waste in the southernmost Atoll could be disposed using the waste management site established in Hithadhoo island.
He added that the resorts in Addu City would also be given the option to bring its waste to be disposed at the site in Hithadhoo
The Minister also informed about a Regional Waste Management Facility and a new waste management system currently in development in Addu City. He further stated that the new system will also be switched under WAMCO after its completion.
