Parliament postpones sit-down with flu task force

The parliamentary committee on Thursday postponed a scheduled sit-down with relevant health officials over the continued spread of the H1N1 virus in the Maldives after a request by the national task force constituted to handle the epidemic.

The government oversight committee had summoned the government task force on Wednesday evening to seek information on the steps taken by the government to curb the spread of the flu.

However, the task force had requested to put-off the sit-down as most members found it difficult to attend, committee chair Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed said Thursday.

But Riyaz assured that the task force would be summoned at a later date.

"We haven't decided when we will again ask the task force to come in. We would discuss it with the task force and set a mutually convenient date," he added.

The most recent statistics have shown that 222 people have been found positive for H1N1 while it has claimed the life of six people thus far.
