Ex-JP lawmaker pledges loyalty to pres

Ihavandhoo lawmaker, Mohamed Abdulla has stated that he cannot be swayed by opposition even with an offer of USD50 million, noting that opposing President Yameen Abdul Gayoom will be considered as negligence towards the best interests of his constituency.

The lawmaker made the statement in response to the rumours circulating on social media that indicated his impending switch to the opposition.

Speaking to 'Avas' on the matter, Abdulla said that the baseless rumours were efforts of the opposition to disrupt the ruling party's unity. He alleged that opposition was offering bribes to members of the parliament in hopes of recruitment, adding that those who accept the offer are at fault for neglecting their constituency.

“I have no intention of joining forces with the opposition. I remain loyal to the president” said Abdulla.

Mohamed Abdulla won the Ihavandhoo seat on the ticket of Jumhooree Party (JP), however later joined ruling party PPM.

PPM had axed MP Mohamed Ameeth from the party after he violated the party whip-line for the censure vote against the speaker. MP Saud Hussain had also announced his switch to deposed ruling PPM Maumoon Abdul Gayoon’s faction. PPM has continued to bleed lawmakers to the former president Gayoom’s side who has now teamed up with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former govt coalition partners Jumhoory Party and Adhaalath Party.
