STELCO says great demand for bottled water

The water bottles supplied by the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) to cater the depleting supply of bottled water in the capital Male, are selling rapidly, the company informed on Tuesday.

The demand for mineral water bottles have gone up with the heatwave Maldives is currently experiencing, and it caused a shortage in water bottles that are sold in local shops.

An employee of STELCO said that the shortage in the pet bottle supply in Male has resulted in a hike in demand for their water bottles.

“We can see a great demand for our water bottles now. The sales are surprisingly great these past few weeks,” the STELCO employee said.

Due to STELCO’s steady supply of water bottles, there was a long queue of people buying cases of water bottles outside the electric company’s headquarters on Tuesday.

STELCO is currently selling 330ml bottles, 500ml bottles 1-litre bottles, and also 1.5 litre and 5 litre water bottles.

A case of 330ml bottles cost MVR50.40 while a case of 500ml bottles cost MVR52.80. One-litre water bottle cases are being sold for MVR38.40, while 1.5 litre bottles are sold MVR52.80, and 5 litre bottles for MVR48.

Late last month, there was a shortage in the ‘Taza’ and ‘Life’ brand water that is produced and sold in the Maldives. A lot of local corner shops had to put a limitation on selling these pet bottles due to short supplies.

According to the manager of Happy Market, which produces ‘Life’ brand water, the shortage in supply of their water bottles was caused by a technical issue in the machine that produces bottled water. However, he assured that the problem would be fixed and the demand for water would be met as soon as possible.

The heatwave Maldives is currently experiencing has resulted in a spike in demand for bottled water, according to local shops. The temperatures fluctuate between 32 degrees and a whopping 34 degrees around this time of the year.
