Maldives records 11% hike in tourist bed capacity

Statistics published by the tourism ministry has revealed that Maldives experienced an 11 per cent increase in tourist bed capacity from January till March this year, compared to the corresponding period of last year.

According to the ministry’s statistics, there were 34,167 tourist beds from January till March last year. However, there were 38,078 tourist beds in Maldives on record till March this year.

There are 127 resorts in Maldives, with a total bed capacity of 27,478, whilst the guesthouse industry holds the second largest number of beds with 6,311 beds.

The 144 safari boats operating in Maldives holds a bed capacity of 2,610, whilst the 16 hotels in Maldives have a bed capacity of 1,610.

Tourists visiting the resorts in Maldives have spent MVR 1,829,779 this year thus far, according the tourism ministry’s statistics. This is a 5 per cent increase from the last year where the total revenue from resorts for the first quarter of the year was MVR 1,829,779.

Despite the increase in revenue from tourist bed capacity, the tourist occupancy in Maldives has gone down in the first quarter of the year. Last year, the occupancy was at 70.9 per cent, whilst this year it was at 60.7 per cent for the first quarter – which is a 10.2 per cent decrease.

Whilst the Maldivian tourism industry experienced an 11 per cent increase in tourist bed capacity, followed by a 10.2 per cent decrease in total occupancy, the Maldivian government has aimed to establish 50 more tourist resorts before the end of the current presidential term.
