Shifa elected as Male City Mayor

Shifa Mohamed has been elected as the mayor of Male City.

Shifa, who was elected to the North-Galolhu constituency of the capital’s council, had served as the deputy mayor of Male in the previous term.

She is the third mayor of Male City, and the first-ever female mayor of a major city in the Maldives.

The new mayor of Male City had also served as the education minister during former president Mohamed Nasheed's presidency.

During the council meeting that was held after the new councillors were sworn in, West-Maafannu councillor Shamaau Shareef was elected as the deputy mayor of Male.

Male City council consists of 13 members. With the exception of just one councillor, the capital’s council consists of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members.

The capital city's council is now dominated by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members, with the exception of just one ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) councillor.

The new councillors were sworn in on Saturday night at Ghiyasuddin International School, by Supreme Court judge Adam Mohamed Abdullah.

A total of 1,487 candidates had contested in the election for 664 seats, including 563 councillors to 179 island councils, 67 councillors to 18 atoll councils and 23 councillors to three city councils.

MDP, backed by the united opposition had secured more than half the seats including the constituencies with the largest populations.
