Maldives recorded a slight rise of 0.3% in tourist arrivals during May, statistics have shown.
A total of 93,491 tourists had visited Maldives during May, which is a 0.3% increase from April’s number of 93,228 as shown by tourism ministry’s statistics.
The statistics released by the ministry, on Wednesday, showed a drop in tourists arriving from the Europe as well as Maldives’ oldest tourism market; UK.
36,279 Europeans had visited the Maldives in May of 2016 while only 35,739 had visited in the same period of this year, which is a 1.5% decrease.
There was a 1.4% decline in British tourists, with the number of tourists at 7,151 this May whereas 7,253 British tourists visited during May of last year.
Being the first to visit the Maldives as tourists, statistics showed a hike of 14% in the number of tourists from Italy during May of this year.
Despite only a slight rise in tourist arrivals for the month of May, the tourism sector of the Maldives has been developing swiftly. Statistically evident, there has been a 5.8% increase in the total number of tourists visited when compared to the numbers during the same period of last year. While a total of 540,887 tourists visited Maldives until the end of May last year, 572,318 tourists have visited the Maldives, to date, this year.
