Housing ministry on Sunday announced plans to resume the re-construction of the main road in the capital Male, Majeedhee Magu after the independence day celebrations on July 26.
The ministry had put the project on hold for the holy month of Ramadan but had previously announced plans to resume the project on Sunday.
However, housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu told Avas on Sunday that the project would be put on hold until after the independence day celebration on request of the home ministry.
"We had planned to resume the project today [Sunday]. But home ministry informed us that it needs the roads to rehearse the independence day celebrations. So we agreed to resume the project after July 26 as it could impede the independence day celebrations," Muizzu explained.
The housing ministry has been carrying out repair works on the main road, with sections of the road being closed off periodically. Currently, the area near the oldest cinema in Male, ‘Olympus’ is being repaired. The stretch of the road to the west of ‘Olympus’ has already been completed.
The ministry has plans to revamp 12 other main roads in Male in 2018.
The construction of the main road heavily effected traffic flow in Male city, causing traffic congestion during peak times, and other connecting roads to be blocked.
