Maldives tourism records 61 percent occupancy

Maldives has recorded a 64.1 percent tourism occupancy in the first six months of this year, according to tourism ministry statistics.

The statistics show that the tourism industry had a 72.1 average occupancy by the end of January this year which had risen to 74.1 percent the following month.

According to the statistics, May had registered the lowest occupancy rate in the first seven months this year with 51 percent.

As Maldives is currently experiencing the tourism off-season, resorts understandably have the highest occupancy rate at 72.1 percent followed by hotels at 43.9 percent, guesthouses at 32.6 percent and liveaboards at 30.9 percent.

Despite the low occupancy rate, the archipelago has welcomed 657,540 tourists so far this year which is over six percent more than the same period last year.
