Court extends disqualified MPs' remand

Criminal Court on Saturday extended the remand of two disqualified lawmakers who were arrested for "illegally" entering the parliament last month.

Maduvvari MP Ameeth and Villingili MP Saud were arrested on July 24 and had been remanded for 15 days which ended on Saturday.

The duo had appealed their remand but though the hearings have ended, the high court is yet to reach a verdict despite their original remand expiring on Saturday.

Both the former ruling party MPs have also challenged their disqualification at the Supreme Court and a ruling is expected later Sunday.

In addition to "trespassing" MP Saud has also been charged with plotting to assassinate an appellate court judge.
