Maldives governor steps down to leave with diplomat husband

Maldives governor Azeema Adam on Wednesday stepped down from her post to move to the US with her husband who was recently appointed as the new Permanent representative of the Maldives to the United Nations (UN).

Avas had first reported that the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) chief had shared her intentions with senior members and colleagues at the central bank.

During a brief press conference on Wednesday, Azeema announced her decision, describing her tenure as the governor the best experience of her life.

Azeema was appointed as the governor in December 2013 after her predecessor Fazeel Najeeb resigned.

The now ex-governor has resigned as her husband, Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed was appointed as the new Permanent representative of Maldives to the UN as well as the non-resident Ambassador to Canada for which he will be traveling to US for posting.

Ali Naseer had served as foreign secretary before the US posting.
