Opposition warns to expropriate govt land sold in capital

Opposition's coalition-led government will expropriate any land or plot from Male' should the transaction and sales of such a deal was found to be illegitimate or illicit - without any financial compensation, a top opposition official warned Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference by the opposition alliance on Wednesday, Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Hassan Latheef criticized the nepotistic approach in procuring or leasing land plots in Male' by the incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's government. He also condemned the high level of corruption involved in such transactions.

Latheef advised buyers and bidders purchasing land plots under the current regime to properly evaluate if such transactions are laced with corruption.

"This is a devised plan of attaining financial benefit to his [Yameen] aides and himself before the current regime ends. A shady scheme of procuring money to state coffers in an attempt to replenish the low cash flow in the government" Latheef said.

Furthermore Latheef pointed out the corruption and illegitimate manner through islands and resorts have been leased on a long term, thus such properties would be reclaimed by the coalition-led opposition's government.

The opposition warning came hours after the government had announced the sale of 19 land plots including Maafannuaa-ge situated in front of Supreme Court building - to the highest bidder.

According to the Housing Ministry the land plots for sale include the now government owned three plots of Maafannu Dhandaheluge - lands from Maafannuaa-ge - along with six plots from the now desolated junkyard at Boduthakurufaanu Magu, south side of Male as well as 10 plots from STO Ready Mix manufacturing block; block 378 situated west of Villa College QI campus.
