Housing Minister rebuffs bridge site in danger of high tides

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed the China-Maldives Friendship bridge is designed to withstand bad weather conditions.

Minister Muizzu's rebuttal comes amid a video of high tides crashing against piers on what the user had assumed as the trestle bridge site at the end of Lonuziyaaraiy. However it is not clear if the bridge shown from the video was indeed the trestle bridge linking Male' and Hulhule' for workers to traverse. The user who uploaded the video had strongly criticized the government and questioned the safety of the bridge and cautioned people.

The minister had countered this stating that one needs to "differentiate between trestle bridge & actual bridge; the latter several meters higher & designed to be safe in stormy weather."

The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, constructed by CCCC Second Harbor Project of China will allow vessels with a height of 12 meters to pass smoothly beneath its structure while the height measured between the floors and sea level at median tide would be around 20 meters.

A top priority under incumbent government's manifesto the bridge commenced its official work back in December 30, 2015.

Housing Ministry assures the bridge construction is proceeding according to the schedule.
