'Oblivious' duo acquitted in alcohol possession case

State pressed charges on two men for the illegitimate possession of alcoholic beverages in box cartons have been acquitted after presenting legal proof of being oblivious about the nature of items.

Both received charges pressed by the state citing the two individuals were in possession of three boxes containing alcoholic beverages near Star Cinema vicinity. The charges were filed against the men on September 26.

During trial the plaintiff failed to produce evidence backing their claim over illegal possession alcohol, which according to the Maldivian Constitution is a criminal offense if such items are carried, used or sold in locally inhabited islands.

However the defendants were successful in providing proof that they were unaware of the nature of the material in possession.

With the lack of proof from the state and defending evidence from the convicted resulted in Criminal Court concluding the case by acquitting both individuals of the offense they were tried with.
